Targeting Pain Relief with Chiropractic: A Safe Alternative to Opioid Use

Written By James J. Hether, D.C. on September 28, 2018

With over 100 people in the U.S. dying every day due to opioid use, one thing’s worryingly clear – we’re in the grips of an opioid epidemic.

Why?

Various experts believe that the increasing number of opioid prescriptions and ineffective pain management have led to this large influx of deaths.

The answer?

It’s imperative we find an effective, natural alternative to pain relief. It’s time to explore the benefits of chiropractic.

Finding a Natural Alternative to Pain Relief

As a highly addictive form of medication, opioids present a wealth of problems. Not only do they put users at risk of developing a deadly addiction, but they also have the ability to mask the true extent of the problem they’re trying to “fix.”

Opioids may dull the pain, but, in some cases, this also masks the severity of the problem.

This may delay treatment and could worsen the condition. The area isn’t given the chance to heal so it’s overexerted.

There’s no surprise, then, that many health care professionals are trying to find alternatives to opioids, particularly at the start of any treatment plan.

However, alternatives will also play an integral part in helping those who are still in pain despite using opioids, or those who have developed an opioid addiction.

Turning to Chiropractic

Chiropractic has stood the test of time for hundreds of years. This tried-and-tested practice has provided a drug-free, natural, and scientifically proven approach to a variety of ailments, treating everything from sciatica to herniated discs.

Many expert bodies are highlighting the importance of using drug-free solutions. For example, the American College of Physicians recently altered its guidelines to suggest that drug-free and non-invasive approaches, like massage and spinal manipulation, should be the first point of call for those with acute or chronic pain in their lower back.

Scientific research backs these altering recommendations, too.

In one study that explored chiropractic in the treatment of chronic neck pain, it was found that, when compared to traditional medication, chiropractic was more effective. A reduction in pain by 75% was felt by 33% of the medication users, while nearly 60% of those visiting their chiropractor. The result was the same a year later, with 53% still enjoying this pain relief from their chiropractor compared to 38% of the medication users.
